Skye Canyon Park expansion draws rave reviews, enthusiastic tail wags
New amenities at Skye Canyon Park have received positive reviews and, more importantly, plenty of use since they recently came online.
The park grew by six new pickleball courts, a full-size roller hockey rink, and dog parks that have become a magnet for two- and four-legged residents.

A social media reminder about the expansion has drawn nearly 600 likes and well over 100 comments, with most along the lines of this one by Michele Burges: “My husband and I have been using the pickleball courts and have loved seeing the kids make use of the rink!”
On a recent Sunday morning Maltipoo sisters Lela and Cookie and their human Jimmy V (who asked that his last name not be used) stretched their legs at the small-dog park.
“I forget that I’m in Vegas,” Jimmy said of Skye Canyon Park. After relocating from suburban Cleveland earlier this year, Jimmy said he enjoys evenings at the park, watching dogs frolic and kids and families play soccer and pickleball. “If you took a picture you could turn it into an ad.”
FROZEN ASSET: Efforts to bring ice skating to the far northwest valley heated up in June.
The City of Las Vegas received four proposals by a June 15 deadline to develop an ice center on five acres of city-owned land near Hualapai Way and the 215 Beltway. The next step is a review by city staff.
“Once a developer is chosen, the developer would work with the city to produce a development agreement that would come before the City Council at a future public meeting,” a city spokesman said.
The ice center, planned along Deer Springs Way, could one day be a cornerstone for a larger sports complex.
And speaking of rinks, one serving the northwest has been put on ice — and not in a good way.
Equipment failure this spring forced closure of the Hylo Park Ice Arena in North Las Vegas, part of a 73-acre mixed-use project being developed on the former Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho casino sites at Lake Mead Boulevard and Rancho Drive.
The rink, a holdover from the casino days, is expected to remain closed for 12 to 14 months while developer Agora Realty & Management replaces the ice-making system, expands capacity to about 2,500 bleacher seats and makes other upgrades.
DUSK GATHERING: The season’s bounty awaits when the summer sun starts to set and Las Vegans emerge from their air-conditioned cocoons. Fresh52 Farmers Market has moved its weekly Skye Canyon event to summer hours, bringing produce, artisan goods and community vibes to Skye Canyon Park Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. More information at fresh52.vcom
