Kids can turn fun hobbiesinto money-making ventures

January 29, 2026 by 215staff

Ever watched a kid at play? They are tireless, passionate, and… maybe training for their next gig?

January is National Hobby Month and of course we turned to our local Vegas Kids Zone kidpreneurs who show how curiosity and a space to explore what they love, incredible things happen. Confidence grows. Skills sharpen. Doors open. Sometimes, those doors are ones many adults never even get the chance to walk through. That journey is what fuels Vegas Family Insider and why our January issue focuses on kids turning hobbies into something real.

Our cover story features a 13-year-old who started with a simple sugar scrub kit and an afternoon selling products in her driveway. With curiosity, encouragement, and access to the right platforms, that hobby became a makeup line, seasonal collections, and an LLC before most kids have written their first résumé. Her story isn’t about selling products.

It’s about what becomes possible when someone believes in a young person’s idea.

To help guide that journey, our Jr. Journalists also talked to local mentors and business leaders who share their best advice for young creators, from starting small and learning through mistakes to building confidence and asking for help. Their perspectives offer both kids and parents practical encouragement for the year ahead.

One of our newest Junior Journalists, Ashra Klemp, takes readers behind the scenes with an interview with famed architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, the Pritzker Prize-winning founder of Kéré Architecture, who is designing the new Las Vegas Museum of Art (LVMA) in downtown Symphony Park. Ashra was able to have a spirited conversation about Kéré’s vision and give us a look at the creative careers shaping our city.

And, of course, our team of Jr.  Journalists and parent columnists have brought their monthly food finds, family-friendly recipes, and insider tips to help locals make the most of January in Las Vegas. It’s all about fresh starts, at any age, this year.

I’ve seen firsthand at our monthly Kidpreneur Markets every 2nd Saturday at Fantastic Indoor Swap Meet how powerful it is when kids are invited into rooms where ideas are shared, questions are welcomed, and potential is taken seriously. When platforms, spaces, and people come together with intention, dreams feel achievable.

January is a reminder that passion matters. And when we build communities that nurture it, following a dream can become a reality. Come see what these kids and our programs are all about Jan. 24 at the VKZ Winter Family Fun Fair in Summerlin
