Keeping your sanity (and spirit) through the holidays

November 30, 2025 by 215staff

By Cheri Petroni

As the holidays approach, life appears to speed up. Calendars fill, expectations rise, and the pressure to make everything “just right” can quietly wear us down.

That’s why this season, I invite you to consider one simple truth: taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s strategic.

Think of it like flying on a plane. You’re always told to put on your own oxygen mask first. Not because you’re more important, but because you can’t help anyone else if you’re gasping for air.

The same goes for the holidays. When you’re grounded, calm, and clear-headed, everything else flows more smoothly — even the chaos.

Here are five practical ways to eliminate stress and enjoy the holid ay season. No spa days required. Just real-life strategies to help you stay steady, sane, and grounded.

Create a Simplified “To-Do List”: Decide in advance what you’re not doing this year. Break your list into three categories: must do, nice to do, and no way! Whether it’s baking six kinds of cookies or attending every party, give yourself permission to opt out. Boundaries are a form of self-respect.

Schedule Weekly Recharge Days: Block out sacred time each week with no errands, screens, or obligations. Use it to breathe, walk, read, or simply be. This is your recovery time. It’s amazing how much clarity can come from a little silence.

Build a Sanity Kit: Create a small stash of things that soothe you — a playlist, a favorite tea, a journal, or a cozy blanket. When stress hits, reach for your kit like a lifeline.

Anchor to Small Joys: Each day, notice one small thing that brings you joy. A warm drink, a kind word, a quiet moment. These tiny sparks add up and help you stay emotionally grounded.

Set Boundaries with Love: Practice saying no with kindness. You can decline an invite or pause a conversation without guilt. Try: “I’d love to, but I’m keeping things simple this year.”

The holidays aren’t about doing it all—they’re about feeling connected, present, and whole. So this season, let’s care for ourselves the way we care for others.

Give yourself and others the gift of presence. Protect your peace. And remember, the most meaningful moments often come from the simplest choices.
